About Me
I am Diego Laya, a Computer Science student at the University of Florida.
I love finding creative ways to solve problems and I am passionate about
creating simple and elegant user interfaces. I am adaptable, easygoing,
and always open to help and learn. I am looking for software engineering
opportunities starting May 2021.

Pricio [Big Project]
Full Stack Developer - Swift, Firebase
Venezuela's hyperinflation is over 1,000,000%.
Businesses cannot afford to continuously print
new price tags, as prices rise by the hour. As if
that wasn't enough, people are forced to wait
in lines to ask for prices at the cashier, which
creates disorder and stress.
No more price tags, lines and disorder.
With Pricio, users have it easier than ever. They just pull up their
phones, point it to the product's barcode, and get the price all in
real time. They can also add such product to their cart, letting
them control the total amount and adjust to their needs.
Admins also benefit, as they are able to quickly add and delete
products, as well as editing existing ones. They can also modify
the exchange rate that defines the product's prices in real time.
GatorRater [Big Project]
Full Stack Developer - MERN Stack
Gator Rater is a website built to help University of Florida
students maintain mental wellness. It was built using the
the MERN stack. It has 4 features soon to be explained.
I worked as a full stack developer, designing the entire UI,
building the comment board, resource page, and more.
Gator Rater won the Best Project Award
#1 out of 46 contestants
Features
Daily Popup
Every 24 hours, once the user logs in, they get a form that
asks how they felt that day. This data is saved and plotted
on the dashboard's graphs, which let the user track their
wellness, and seek help if necessary. It targets important
factors for wellness such as sleep, exercise and stress.
Weekly Schedule
Users upload iCal files that lay out the schedule for the week.
They can also rate or check the rating of such assignments,
calculated by averaging all ratings by users that completed
them. Ratings are based on difficulty and time to complete.
This feature lets users plan ahead and reduce stress.
Comment Board
Users can check comments for classes they plan to take, this
gives them a better insight on what to expect and plan ahead.
They can also filter by specific professors teaching the course,
as well as leaving their own comment, liking, flagging, etc.
Lastly, each search has a direct link to relevant Reddit forums.
Resources Page
Users can see a map with locations that target different
aspects of overall wellness. Users can also suggest new places
to add to the map, and new tips for other users after being
accepted by the admins. Lastly, users can see a list of
hotlines and websites where they can get quick help.
Events App [Small Project]
Full Stack Developer - Swift, CoreData
Designed and built an iOS mobile application where users see a list of 250 upcoming events from the
SeatGeek API. For each event, users can see the name, time, location, level of hype, and a direct link to buy
tickets. Users can also like events, and filter by their liked events, which remain between sessions thanks to
CoreData's data persistense.
Calculator [Small Project]
Full Stack Developer - JavaScript, React, CSS, Node.js, Firebase
Designed and built a simple calculator web application where users can calculate operations and see a real
time list of the last 10 calculations made by other users globally, without needing to refresh the page. The
calculator offers input validation as soon as the user inputs numbers or symbols, letting the user know
if they need to tweak something before executing. For the history, a Firebase database was implemented.
But that's not it!
I've also completed smaller projects such as:
Minesweeper Replica
C++ - Developed Minesweeper from scratch with the SFML Library.
Image Processor
C++ - Processes binary TGA files creating new edited images by reading
the file and manipulating according to each effect's formula.
Titanic Predictor
Python - Model that predicts if a passenger survives on the Titanic
based on age, gender, economic class and more using the SKLearn Library.
and more...

what now?
Vagabond (In Progress)
Senior Project
My team and I are creating a federated peer-to-peer social network that works with
the ActivityPub Protocol, which offers a more secure and controlless approach to social
networking. It is a complicated project but I am ceratinly learning a lot and I am
enjoying the process.
You made it to the end, thank you!
